From subjects to citizens : the conquest of citizenship in Portugal, from the 1820 Liberal Revolution to the present day

Abstract

This book brings together the papers prepared for the colloquium "From subjects to citizens: the conquest of citizenship, from vintismo to the present", organised within the framework of the commemorations of the bicentenary of the Revolution of 1820. The fundamental scope of this book (the same of the colloquim) is to evaluate the historical legacy of the "citizenship revolution" in Portugal, in the last two centuries, from the founding moment of vintismo (1820-1823) and its subsequent developments, particularly through setembrismo (1836-1842) and republicanism (1911-1936), until its full deployment under the Constitution of 1976 and the current democratic Republic.

Este livro reúne os trabalhos elaborados do âmbito do colóquio «De súbitos a cidadãos:. a conquista da cidadania, do vintismo à atualidade», inserido nas comemorações do bicentenário da Revolução de 1820. O escopo fundamental desta edição (tal como o do colóquio) é avaliar o legado histórico da "revolução da cidadania" em Portugal nos dois últimos séculos, desde o momento fundacional do vintismo (1820-1823) e o seu desenvolvimento posterior, em especial pelo setembrismo (1836-1842) e pelo republicanismo (1911-1926), até à sua plena expressão na Constituição de 1976 e na atual República democrática.
