Construção e declínio do primeiro sistema partidário em Portugal (1820-1910)

Abstract

O artigo identifica os graus por que passou o primeiro sistema partidário em Portugal, conhecido como «rotativismo», na sua construção e declínio, dando especial atenção às interações entre o poder, os partidos e a sociedade, num regime de monarquia com uma sociedade ainda pouco politizada. A construção do sistema foi obra sobretudo da classe política liberal, desde a sua vitória em 1834, em interação com os monarcas e com uma crescente participação da população, seguindo uma dinâmica bipartidária que se consolidou no final da década de 1870. Na fase de declínio, depois de 1890, o monarca prevaleceu sobre os partidos e a sociedade, em contraste com o forte crescimento da população urbana, especialmente em Lisboa, entre a qual o partido republicano foi ganhando grande relevância.

The article identifies the degrees that the first party system in Portugal, known as «rotativismo», went through, in its construction and decline, paying special attention to the interactions between power, parties and society, in a monarchy regime with a society still little politicized. The construction of the system was mainly the work of the liberal political class, since its victory in 1834, in interaction with the monarchs and with a growing participation of the population, following a two-party dynamic that was consolidated in the late 1870s. In the period of decline, after 1890, the monarch prevailed over parties and society, in contrast to the strong growth of the urban population, especially in Lisbon, among which the republican party gained great relevance.
