This article falls within the scope of the History of Criminology. Starting from the Enlightenment’s commitment to knowledge and from the principles pertaining to the social contract and to classical utilitarianism, it addresses the main ideas of the classical school of criminology with regard to the reform of the penal system and the explanation of crime. To this end, it mainly draws on that school’s most prominent authors, Cesare Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham. |
