Abstract

Um forte domínio senhorial com características repressivas despoletou um sentido de entreajuda e de libertação pela festividade popular. É este espírito que vem a contribuir para edificar um espaço onde solidariedade e festividade andam a par. Com uma actividade mais cultural do que solidária, o espaço molda-se e descaracteriza-se. A descaracterização, o envelhecimento, A difícil acessibilidade e prováveis questões económicas, abrandam a sua atividade cultural. A intenção de uma nova intervenção, perspetiva uma nova descaracterização pelo que se torna necessário agir para a desmotivar. Para alertar para o perigo desta intervenção, abordamos este tema sob a perspetiva histórica da freguesia e do edifício, realçando a sua atividade mutualista e cultural, apresentando uma solução que aborda o espaço com base naquilo que ele foi e eliminando a hipótese de um programa extenso. Assim, analisamos a história da freguesia; as características arquitectónicas do centro urbano e do edifício; contextualizamos a sua época do ponto de vista político-social, analisamos as cartas de salvaguarda do património para entendermos como intervir e apresentamos um caso de estudo que sintetiza as conclusões a que chegamos. Entendemos que levar o edifício à sua forma exterior inicial podia motivar a reabilitação de outros edifícios marcantes para a cidade. Reduzir o programa ao mínimo necessário facilitava a depuração da forma mas não lhe retirava a funcionalidade pois o problema que aqui se coloca é o saber moldar a função ao espaço em vez de obrigar o espaço a moldar-se à função.
