Arquitectura de bibliotecas

Abstract

A presente dissertação visa refletir sobre a arquitetura das bibliotecas. Através de uma leitura evolutiva, procura-se dissecar e interpretar os vários exemplos sedimentados ao longo do tempo, extraindo reflexões e conclusões com o intuito de ajudar a esclarecer os desafios de desenho que as bibliotecas enfrentam na contemporaneidade. Estando estas instituições seculares a passar por um momento de revisão na atualidade, induzido por mudanças culturais, sociais, tecnológicas e políticas estruturantes, importa refletir de que modo a arquitetura pode contribuir para desenhar e reafirmar o valor da instituição. Refletindo sobre esta nova conjuntura, procura-se balizar os desafios e os temas que estimulam a arquitetura das bibliotecas contemporâneas. O estudo permite evidenciar a importância atribuída atualmente ao espaço físico da biblioteca, outrora pensado para as coleções e o empréstimo, hoje direcionado para o leitor e a comunidade, funcionando como lugares de encontro e de partilha de conhecimentos. Mediante a análise de três casos de referência da Rede Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas (RNBP), procura-se perceber como se processa esta transformação no contexto português. Tomam-se como exemplos nacionais a Biblioteca Municipal de Viana do Castelo, da autoria do Arq. Álvaro Siza Vieira, a Biblioteca Municipal de Tavira, da autoria do Arq. João Luís Carrilho da Graça, e, por último, a Biblioteca Municipal de Vila Real, da autoria do Arq. António Belém Lima. A investigação mostra que a arquitetura das bibliotecas da RNBP responde aos temas globais que a instituição enfrenta na contemporaneidade, contudo, ajusta-se às especificidades do contexto português, distanciando-se em termos tipológicos, espaciais e formais das suas congéneres internacionais.

Abstact: The current dissertalion aims to reflect about the architecture of libraries. Through an evolutionary analysis, this study looks to dissect and interpret several examples set throughout time, from which observations and conclusions can be derived with the purpose of solving the design challenges related to libraries that exist in today’s world. As these centennial establishments are presently going through a moment of transition, which is caused by cultural social technological changes and structuring policies, it is important to consider in what way architecture can contribute to design and reaifirm the value of the library as an establishment. Considering this new juncture, this work attempts to determine the challenges and themes at the root ot contemporary library architecture. This study showcases the importance currently attributed to a library’s physical space, which was once planned in terms of its book collections and lending system ond now is focused on the reader and the community, being used as a place to meet ond share knowledge. Through the analysis ot three case studies of the National Network of Public Libraries (NNPL), this sludy tries to understand how this transtormalion occured within the Portuguese context. As national examples, one will consider the Viana do Castelo Municipal Library designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Tavira Municipal Library by João Luís Carrilho da Graça and lastly rhe Vila Real Municipal Library by António Belém Lima. Research findings show that the NNPL library archilecture has been adapted to the global themes that the establishment faces in this present time. However, il also adjusts itself to the specificities of the Portuguese context, distancing itself in typological, spatial and formal terms from its international counterparts.
