Uma perspetiva realista neoclássica sobre as implicações para Taiwan da disputa territorial das ilhas Senkaku/Diaoyutai/Tiaoyutai

Abstract

A importância desta investigação resulta da necessidade de esclarecimento sobre as implicações para Taiwan da disputa sino-nipónica sobre as ilhas em questão. Taiwan reclama as ilhas sob o fundamento que estas foram indevidamente ocupadas pelo Japão, e geograficamente estas ilhas estão localizadas na Zona Económica Exclusiva de Taiwan. O problema de Taiwan é que tal como a República Popular da China, e ao contrário do Japão, nunca exerceu uma ocupação efetiva das ilhas em questão. No entanto, justifica o seu direito com base de que as ilhas pertencerem a República da China com base no argumento de que as ilhas se encontravam sob a soberania chinesa desde a dinastia Qing, devido a proximidade geográfica com a ilha da Formosa e que foram ocupadas ilegalmente pelo Japão como consequência da Primeira Guerra Sino–Japonesa. As razões invocadas por Taipé são semelhantes aos motivos defendidos por Pequim. Metodologicamente esta questão será abordada à luz da teoria realista neoclássica das Relações Internacionais, com recurso à bibliografia específica. A principal conclusão desta investigação é que Taiwan não tem legitimidade para reclamar as ilhas em questão, assim como a República Popular da China.

The importance of this investigation results from the need to clarify the implications for Taiwan of the Sino-Japanese dispute over the islands in question. Taiwan claims the islands on the grounds that they were unduly occupied by Japan, and geographically these islands are in Taiwan’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The problem with Taiwan is that, like the People’s Republic of China, and unlike Japan, it has never exercised an effective occupation of the islands in question. However, it justifies its right on the basis that the islands belong to the Republic of China based on the argument that the islands were under Chinese sovereignty since the Qing Dynasty, due to their geographical proximity to the island of Formosa and that they were occupied illegally by Japan because of the First Sino–Japanese War. The reasons cited by Taipei are like the reasons defended by Beijing. Methodologically, this issue will be addressed in the light of the Neoclassical Realist Theory of International Relations, using specific bibliography. The main conclusion of this investigation is that Taiwan does not have the legitimacy to claim the islands in question, as does the People’s Republic of China.
