Sérvia : pátria de imperadores romanos

Abstract

Este artigo incide sobre o período do Baixo Império Romano (sécs. III e IV), durante o qual a maioria dos imperadores teve origem na Moésia Superior e na Baixa Panónia, ou seja na actual Sérvia. Este facto ilustra o crucial significado estratégico e político das províncias balcânicas e danubianas e dos seus exércitos (legiões) no Baixo Império Romano. Entre eles Constantino, o Grande, Aureliano, Probo (cerca de vinte imperadores) que salvaram e reformularam o Império da desagregação. Constantino, o Grande e os seus sucessores lograram transformar com sucesso o velho Estado pagão romano numa civilização diferente, dominada pela fé cristã e sua Igreja.

The Article is dealing with the period of Late Roman Empire (III-IV centuries), during which the majority of Emperors had their origin in Upper Moesia and Lower Pannonia, i.e. present day Serbia. This fact only illustrates the crucial strategic and political significance of the Balkans and Danubian provinces and their army (legions) in the Late Roman Empire. Among those rulers are Constantine the Great, Aurelianus, Probus and others (around twenty emperors) who saved and reformed the Empire from its desintegration. Constantin the Great and his successors transformed succesefully the ancient pagan Roman State into a diferent civilisation, dominated by Christian faith and its church.
