Edifícios da Companhia de Jesus em Lisboa : potencialidades e metamorfoses

Abstract

A Arquitectura da Companhia de Jesus representa um ponto-chave no panorama arquitectónico dos vários sítios onde se instalou. Apesar das dificuldades sociais que atravessou durante o seu primeiro período em Portugal, os Jesuítas construíram edifícios notáveis que ainda hoje representam pontos de interesse na cidade de Lisboa.

Torna-se essencial perceber que características e potencialidades teriam estes edifícios para terem tido a capacidade de absorver as diferentes metamorfoses a que estiveram sujeitos até à contemporaneidade.

Em primeiro lugar, um Colégio que marcou presença em dois edifícios: um deles um dos principais hospitais de Lisboa e o outro um futuro centro de inovação social e alojamento turístico. Em segundo lugar, o Noviciado pelo qual passaram várias e importantes instituições ligadas ao ensino e que hoje é um dos principais museus da cidade e por fim, a Casa Professa onde hoje se situa a sede da Santa Casa da Misericórdia e, também, um museu dedicado à história da Companhia de Jesus.

The Company of Jesus’ arquitecture represents a key point in the arquitectural overview of the several places where it was instaled. Although the social difficulties it passed through during its first period in Portugal, the Jesuits built some notable buildings that nowadays still represent points of interest in the city of Lisbon. It becomes essential to understand what characteristics and potentialities had this buildings to have had the capacity of absorbing the different metamorphoses they had been subjects until the contemporaneity. First of all, a College which attended two buildings: one of them one of the main hospitals in Lisbon, and the other one a future centre for social innovation and tourist accommodation. Secondly, the Novitiate which has played host to several and important institutions linked to education and which nowadays is one of the main museums of the city; and finally, the Professed House, where today is located the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (“Holy House of Mercy”)’s headquarters, as well as a museum dedicated to the history of the Society of Jesus.
