Santuário Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel : história, simbologia e arquitetura

Abstract

Num lugar inóspito, com uma vegetação tesourada pelo vento e eleito por várias culturas para expressar a sua fé intemporal, independentemente da sua crença, ao longo de décadas, nasceu um Santuário com um traçado racionalizado, pensado ao detalhe como se de um cenário se tratasse. Construído num dos extremos da Serra da Arrábida, uma Serra com particularidades e belezas únicas pontuadas por grutas e algares, penedias e combas, têm sido encontrados testemunhos de várias civilizações que aí se abrigaram e delas em si elevaram memoriais de culto. Desta fusão cultural nasce este majestoso Santuário dedicado a Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel, um recinto cheio de segredos e mistérios com uma identidade muito própria, tanto a nível arquitetónico como religioso. Trata-se de uma peça de arquitetura de valor incalculável, um conjunto arquitetónico com uma morfologia única que, foi sofrendo mutações ao longo dos anos. Aqui encontramos reunidas arquitetura religiosa, com evidentes influências de estilos como o Maneirista e o Barroco no templo principal, enquanto na pequena Ermida da Memória é evidente uma fusão de uma génese islâmica com arte Mudéjar, arquitetura civil bem representada pelas hospedarias com um carácter muito popular de uma arquitetura Vernácula, e por fim remanescências de uma arquitetura militar, que hoje pouco ou nada resta mas que perpetua nas ruinas do contiguo Forte de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel. Durante este estudo, fomos percebendo pequenas coincidências que nos suscitaram curiosidade, elementos que se evidenciaram, métricas que nos pareciam idênticas, espaços que embora em contextos diferentes se repetiam. Pelo rigor do entendimento desta cultura arquitetural, entendemos, não obstante que todas as hipóteses de análise abordadas são olhares e leituras, conjunções de estudo que orientam este trabalho também na premissa de contribuir para abrir portas para análises futuras.

In an inhospitable place, with wind-blown vegetation and elected by various cultures to express their timeless faith, regardless of their belief, for decades, a Sanctuary was born with a streamlined layout, thought to the detail as if of a scenary. Built on one of the outskirts of the Arrábida mountain range, with unique features and beauties punctuated by caves, delves and rocks conglomerates, testimonies have been found of various civilizations that have taken shelter there and they have elevated memorials of worship. From this cultural fusion is born this majestic Sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of the Cape Espichel, an enclosure full of secrets and mysteries with a very own identity, both architectonic and religious. It is a piece of architecture of incalculable value, an architectural ensemble with an unique morphology that has undergone mutations over the years. Here we find together religious architecture, with evident influences of styles like the Mannerist and the Baroque in the main temple, whereas in the small Hermitage of the Memory is evident a fusion of an Islamic genesis with Mudéjar art, as well as, civil architecture that is well represented by the inns with a a very popular character of a Vernacular architecture, and finally remnants of a military architecture, which today has little or nothing left but perpetuates in the ruins of the adjoining Fort of Our Lady of Cape Espichel. During this study, we noticed small coincidences that aroused curiosity, elements that are evident, metrics that seemed identical, spaces that although in different contexts were repeated.Due to the rigor of the understanding of this architectural culture, we understand that, despite the fact that all hypotheses analyzed are perspectives and readings, study conjunctions that guide this work also on the premise of contributing to open doors for future analysis.
