A ruína enquanto elemento arquitectónico de valor : o contributo de Nuno Brandão Costa, em quatro obras suas

Abstract

A sociedade, cada vez mais centrada no presente e na experiência instantânea do tempo, confronta-se com uma assimetria entre os ciclos de construção e degradação, e uma vertiginosa destruição das matrizes identitárias. Perante esta conjuntura, a presente dissertação pretende reflectir sobre o valor da ruína no âmbito da prática arquitectónica contemporânea, enquanto matéria do passado, passível de fruição e transformação. São considerados três valores personificados pela ruína; o valor estético, o valor da memória e o valor disciplinar. Sumariza-se a dimensão estética e simbólica associada à ruína na Europa Ocidental, desde do século XIV até aos dias de hoje. Em seguida, cogita-se sobre a relevância da ruína, enquanto plataforma que instiga a memória, no processo de preservação e construção das identidades sociais e culturais. Pretende-se ainda focar o sentido disciplinar e operativo da ruína, enquanto base do processo interpretativo e imaginativo, que fundamenta a linguagem formal arquitectónica e as práticas de restauração. Num último momento é feita uma análise a quatro obras de Nuno Brandão Costa, onde se tenciona compreender a praxis do arquitecto, no que concerne ao valor atribuído às ruínas pré-existentes e ao diálogo estabelecido entre a ruína e a nova construção.

Society, increasingly focused on the present and the instantaneous experience of time, is confronted with an asymmetry between the cycles of construction and degradation, and a vertiginous destruction of the identity matrices. Given this situation, this dissertation intends to reflect on the value of ruin within contemporary architectural practice, as a matter of the past, which can be enjoyed and transformed. Three values are considered personified by the ruin; the aesthetic value, the memory value and the disciplinary value. It summarizes the aesthetic and symbolic dimension associated with the ruin in Western Europe, from the fourteenth century to the present day. Next, the relevance of ruin as a platform that instigates memory is considered in the process of preservation and construction of social and cultural identities. It is also intended to focus on the disciplinary and operative sense of ruin, as the basis of the interpretive and imaginative process, which underlies the formal architectural language and restoration practices. Finalising, an analysis is made of four works by Nuno Brandão Costa, where one intends to understand the praxis of the architect, as regards the value attributed to the preexisting ruins and the dialogue established between the ruin and the new construction.
